The San Antonio Spurs leveled the Western Conference Finals by defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder with a commanding score of 103-82 on Sunday. With each team now having two victories, Game 5 will be crucial as both teams head back to Paycor Center in Oklahoma City on Tuesday night.
A key aspect of this game was the Thunder’s decrease in 3-point shooting accuracy. In Game 3, they were successful, shooting 44.7% from three-point range and 48.1% overall. However, the Spurs adjusted their defense effectively in Game 4. As a result, the Thunder struggled, making just 6 of 33 from beyond the arc (18%), and only managed a 33% field goal percentage overall.
While the Spurs didn’t fare much better in shooting percentages, with 27% from 3-point range and 39% overall, they capitalized on free throw opportunities. San Antonio took 32 shots from the free throw line, considerably more than Oklahoma City’s 18 attempts. This aggressiveness on the court paid off.
The Spurs started strong, obtaining a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter and extending it to double digits before halftime. Oklahoma City’s troubles continued in the third quarter as turnovers became an issue. San Antonio exploited these mistakes throughout the season, scoring 25 points directly from the Thunder’s 20 turnovers. They excelled in fast-break scenarios as well.
During the game, the Spurs achieved a 25-point lead, allowing them to rest their starters in the fourth quarter. Victor Wembanyama led the team with 33 points (11 of 22 shooting) and contributed three 3-pointers, eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.
Stephon Castle added 13 points, three rebounds, and six assists; Devin Vassell had 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists; De’Aaron Fox recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. The Spurs’ bench was effective too, with six players contributing to the score. Dylan Harper notably added seven points and five rebounds.
For Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a challenging night, shooting six of 15 but making all seven free throws. He also recorded four rebounds, seven assists, and four turnovers. The Thunder’s bench, usually reliable, underperformed, with Aaron Wiggins and Jared McCain combining for a 3 of 21 shooting performance, totaling eight points.
The Spurs and Thunder, top contenders in the West, will face off again on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
