The New York Yankees marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a win against the New York Mets. Outfielder Cody Bellinger contributed a three-run homer off rookie Nolan McLean in the second inning, leading the Yankees to a 6-4 victory.
An unexpected incident briefly halted the game. A spectator holding a Palestinian flag ran onto the field at Yankee Stadium at 9:11 p.m. Security quickly managed the situation, escorting the individual off the field amid loud chants of “U-S-A” from the crowd. The exact details of the person’s entry onto the field remain unknown.
The game continued smoothly after the interruption. The Yankees commemorated the 9/11 anniversaries with moments of silence and the playing of ‘God Bless America.’ Both teams wore special caps honoring the FDNY, NYPD, and other first responders. Across Major League Baseball, players and coaches donned caps featuring a ‘We Shall Never Forget’ patch.
During the game, designated hitter Ben Rice also hit a homer. The Yankees improved their record to 85-62, standing 23 games above .500. Rookie Spencer Jones and Ryan McMahon each added RBI singles, helping the team remain three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.
Pitcher Carlos Rodón performed well, allowing two runs over 6.3 innings and achieving eight strikeouts, including two against Juan Soto. Before his home run, Cody Bellinger received the ceremonial first pitch from Brielle Saracini, the daughter of one of the pilots on United Airlines Flight 175 during the 9/11 attacks.
Bellinger’s performance included hitting a full-count curveball for a home run into the right field seats. Ben Rice followed with his 37th home run on a first-pitch sinker.
The second game in the Subway Series is scheduled for Saturday at 1:35 p.m.
