Jesse Ridgway, a well-known YouTuber, revealed this week that he and his wife made the choice to end their pregnancy after learning their unborn child was diagnosed with Down syndrome. This emotionally charged decision was described as one of the hardest they have ever faced.
Ridgway announced the diagnosis and their subsequent decision through a message on X, stating they grappled with the choice after medical professionals informed them of the likelihood of their baby being born with the genetic condition. “This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,” Ridgway expressed. “The choice was not made lightly. We greatly appreciate the personal stories and the unconditional support received from fans, regardless of our decision,” he added.
Ridgway’s YouTube platform, McJuggerNuggets, boasts over four million subscribers. Throughout his wife Ashley’s pregnancy, he kept the audience updated, including sharing a heartfelt video of them reacting to the diagnosis confirmation. The couple was visibly emotional as they processed the news.
“I know some of you may be disappointed to hear this news,” Ridgway wrote, acknowledging that the decision might displease some followers. “We are devastated. This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for both of us, especially Ashley,” he continued, explaining that she had undergone the procedure earlier in the week.
The YouTuber provided statistics about Down syndrome, emphasizing the potential health challenges: half of children with the condition have heart defects, and many face hearing and eyesight issues. “Sadly, the list is long,” he noted, urging people to research more about the condition.
The announcement went viral, leading to a range of reactions from the public. House Speaker Mike Johnson commented on X, reflecting on the nation’s founding principles that everyone is created equal. He criticized the casual dismissal of a child’s life, stating that our value comes from a divine origin, not external attributes.
Abby Johnson, once a Planned Parenthood clinic director, voiced her strong disapproval on X, using harsh language to criticize the Ridgways’ decision. Similarly, Kyle Mann of The Babylon Bee labeled Ridgway “evil.”
On the other hand, some users shared positive experiences about raising children with Down syndrome, highlighting the advances in modern medicine that support such children. A user stated, “My son has Down syndrome and he’s one of the best things that ever happened to me.”
In follow-up comments, Ridgway expressed his disappointment and upset over the hostile reactions they received, including hateful messages and threats. “The last 24 hours have exposed a side of humanity that is deeply disturbing,” he shared, noting the anger and grief visible in public reactions.
Ridgway stressed that the backlash arose because many do not publicly discuss these painful decisions. “After 20 years on the Internet, this is par for the course,” he commented, viewing the situation as an opportunity to further the conversation on such sensitive matters.
