Reports over the weekend suggested Za’Darius Smith was set to sign with the Cleveland Browns. However, Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler with 70 1/2 career sacks, disputed these reports. On Monday, he worked out for the Atlanta Falcons.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com claimed Smith was close to finalizing a deal with the Browns. Yet, Smith was in Atlanta and expressed on social media that no agreement had been made. He also mentioned having another workout scheduled with a different team.
The NFL wire, tracking player workouts and transactions, confirmed Smith’s presence with the Falcons on Monday. This development hints at two teams showing interest in the same player, creating an interesting scenario.
The Browns are keen on Smith due to his previous tenure with them. He started 25 games, achieving 10 sacks and 27 quarterback hits. On the other hand, the Falcons have pressing needs in their pass rush department.
Falcons’ interest partly stems from new head coach Kevin Stefanski, who previously coached Smith at the Browns. This connection adds an intriguing dynamic to the situation.
As for the Browns, coach Todd Monken deferred questions about Smith to general manager Andrew Berry, stating, “I’m not going to comment on that. I really don’t know where it’s at.” Meanwhile, the Falcons are dealing with injuries and suspensions, heightening their need for a player like Smith.
The Falcons’ urgency lies in their loss of key players during training camp. First-round pick Jalon Walker’s ACL injury and James Pearce’s suspension for eight games have intensified their search for capable pass rushers.
This competition between the Browns and Falcons adds an intriguing layer to Smith’s decision. His final choice may reflect his preference for reunions or new collaborations in the NFL landscape.
