In London, a toddler remained in critical condition after being attacked by a crocodile within an enclosure at a zoo in the United Kingdom, according to British police. The three-year-old, whose name has not been disclosed, was rescued from the crocodile enclosure on Thursday at Johnson’s of Old Hurst Zoo in Cambridgeshire, southern England. Zoo staff quickly transported the child to a nearby hospital.
Authorities did not reveal how the child came to be in the reptile area. However, they confirmed the arrest of a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. “The man, who is not connected to the victim, was deemed unfit for an interview,” stated Cambridgeshire police. On Friday, the unnamed man was released on bail as detectives pursued the investigation.
The child “sustained serious injuries while in the enclosure,” police reported, and he remains “in a critical but stable condition.” Detective Inspector Verity McCann expressed, “Our thoughts remain with the boy and his family, and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time.” She added, “Our enquiries are ongoing as we strive to understand the circumstances surrounding this distressing incident.”
The family-operated zoo announced that its Tropical House, where the crocodiles reside, will remain closed “out of respect to the family” until further notice. As per the zoo’s website, the facility houses over one hundred animals, including lions, tigers, and capybaras. The staff at the zoo have held “a particular fascination with crocodiles,” having cared for and engaged with these animals for twenty years.
