Australia Coach Criticizes Referee After Loss to U.S.
Australia’s head coach, Tony Popovic, commented on the referee following a 2-0 defeat by the U.S. in Seattle. He expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating, stating it wasn’t an ideal day for the referee.
A significant moment occurred when the U.S. scored its second goal. Initially ruled offside, the decision was reversed after a VAR review, confirming the goal’s validity.
The U.S. scored just before halftime after a free kick was blocked. Alex Freeman, son of ex-NFL player Antonio Freeman, scored with a header. Australia challenged the goal, believing their goalie was impeded. However, VAR upheld the goal.
The match saw heightened tensions when Australia’s Harry Souttar and the USA’s Folarin Balogun clashed. Both players, along with Australia’s Jacob Italiano, received yellow cards. The game ended with Australia receiving four yellow cards and the U.S. three.
After the match, Popovic approached German referee Felix Zwayer urgently. Zwayer, 45, suffered cramps towards the end, requiring help from players on both teams.
Despite frustrations, Popovic acknowledged the U.S. team’s strength, noting his players appeared tired and were outplayed in many aspects. He remarked that poor performance in the first half hindered their chances.
“We looked sluggish, heavy-legged… They won every duel,” said Popovic. “At this level, you can’t give away that much in the first.”
The U.S. leads Group D with six points. Australia trails in second with three points. Paraguay and Turkey, both without points, will compete to influence the group standings. A win or tie for Paraguay against Turkey could secure the U.S. a victory in Group D.
