Shohei Ohtani’s Absence for Family Event
Dodgers’ star Shohei Ohtani was away from the team on Friday to attend the birth of his second child. His absence during the series opener against the Orioles left the Dodgers down a player, as they chose not to place him on the paternity list. The team anticipates his return this weekend. Ohtani completed his pitching duties on Wednesday, allowing him time to rejoin the team well before his next scheduled pitch.
While Ohtani was absent, rookie Ryan Ward stepped in as the designated hitter, batting seventh. Additionally, Kyle Tucker took over the leadoff position usually held by Ohtani.
Ohtani’s Performance Amidst Challenges
Before Friday, Ohtani held a .962 OPS, the second-highest in the National League for qualified hitters, and his 1.47 ERA ranked second among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched. Despite recent performances with seven earned runs in two starts, he’s been dealing with a blister on his right hand’s middle finger. He also missed a game recently due to left knee inflammation, potentially caused by pitching mechanics.
Will Smith’s Injury Update
Catcher Will Smith will receive an injection for his neck, which has been causing him discomfort. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed that imaging showed nothing severely concerning. Smith had been diagnosed with an inflamed disk. He remains on the injured list beyond the minimum time expected in spite of earlier hopes for a quick return. He may not join the team on their trip to Minnesota starting Monday.
Progress Reports on Other Players
Closer Edwin Díaz, who had elbow surgery, has progressed to throwing off the mound. He completed a 15-pitch bullpen session on Friday, delivering fastballs at 91-93 mph. Roberts spoke of a promising outlook for Díaz’s recovery without rushing his return.
Addition Injury Updates
Left fielder Teoscar Hernández is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week as he continues to recover from a strained left hamstring. Meanwhile, left-hander Blake Snell, after a NanoNeedle scope procedure on his elbow, is advancing in his throwing program and nearing the stage to throw off the mound, according to Roberts.
