Over the past year, approximately 9,000 active-duty troops have been stationed along the nearly 2,000-mile stretch of the southwest border. Their primary mission is to confront illegal migrants, smugglers, and drug cartels.
This deployment has been ongoing despite the Trump administration having largely met its objective of reducing illegal border crossings. The presence of these troops costs the government tens of millions of dollars weekly.
The military patrols, operating in tandem with Customs and Border Protection and the Mexican military, have driven Mexican cartels and smugglers to more isolated mountainous areas. This shift aims to make detection by these forces more challenging.
However, U.S. officials report an increase in threats faced by American troops stationed at the border. Concerns are growing among some members of Congress who question whether this deployment represents the best use of active-duty troops. These troops might otherwise be engaged in training for potential deployments to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, or the Indo-Pacific region.
Both lawmakers and independent analysts express worries that border missions could distract from necessary training, drain military resources, and ultimately undermine the operational readiness of U.S. forces.
