Camp Breastie: A Retreat for Breast Cancer Survivors
The annual retreat in Pennsylvania has become an anticipated event for breast cancer survivors. Hundreds attend the four-day gathering, prompting organizers to plan an additional location on the West Coast due to increasing popularity.
At Camp Breastie, early risers participate in a unique lakeside venting session, marking the day’s first activity. Participants inscribe their troubles onto small stones before casting them into the water. Shelby Jones from New York City identified her burden as ‘Anger,’ while Emily Tout from Buffalo expressed ‘Fear.’ Ms. Tout is a single mother dealing with metastatic disease.
Nancy Antoine, a cancer survivor from Davie, Florida, encouraged the attendees with scream therapy. She urged them to release their emotions by vocalizing their frustrations, claiming, ‘Just release what you’re carrying with you, and let the lake receive it.’
About 500 women, including survivors, those living with advanced disease, and those at high risk who have taken preventive steps, attended the event. The retreat, situated near Honesdale, Pa., is in demand, leading to plans for future expansion on the West Coast.
In the United States, over 350,000 women receive a breast cancer diagnosis annually, and there’s a noted increase in cases among younger adults. The camp appeals particularly to this demographic. Demand remains high, with tickets selling out quickly. In 2025, camp tickets were gone within two weeks, and this year, in under two hours.
The attendees are divided into cabin groups, whimsically named after fruits, such as ‘Apple.’
