Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, is set to face trial for charges related to corruption and influence peddling. A judge ruled on Saturday that the evidence against her warrants a trial.
Ms. Gómez has been under investigation since 2024. The allegations surfaced after an anti-graft group accused her of favoring companies with which she has connections in public contract bids. Despite her denials, the investigation has moved forward.
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has charged Ms. Gómez with embezzlement, corruption, misappropriation of funds, and influence peddling. She has been ordered to surrender her passport and report to court bi-weekly. The court has yet to schedule the trial date.
The judge stated, “Behaviors such as these emanating from presidential palaces seem more characteristic of absolutist regimes, thankfully long forgotten in our country.”
In Spain, citizens can file complaints directly with the court. A judge reviews evidence and decides if the case proceeds to trial. Ms. Gómez’s case also attracted attention from political groups like Vox, a far-right party, which joined the complaint against her.
Prime Minister Sánchez characterized the case as a “harassment operation” aimed at damaging his political standing. While facing domestic pressure from corruption allegations, he maintains significant support from liberal circles internationally.
This situation highlights ongoing scrutiny and challenges within Spain’s political landscape, as leaders increasingly face legal examinations of their ethical conduct.
