ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, known for his vocal critiques of the New York Knicks, has shifted his stance. Following the Knicks’ recent NBA title victory, Smith participated in Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s “Roommates Show” podcast. Hosted inside the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden, the event took place shortly after the Knicks celebrated with a ticker-tape championship parade.
The audience expressed disapproval upon Smith’s introduction, intensifying when Hart highlighted Smith’s previous critiques. Hart referenced Smith’s past comments doubting Villanova’s 2016 roster, which included Hart, Brunson, and Mikal Bridges—players integral to the Knicks’ championship success. Smith had initially dismissed Brunson’s 2022 signing as insufficient for the Knicks.

Hart challenged Smith. The Knicks forward referenced the championship win against the Cleveland Cavaliers, underscoring the significance of Smith’s past remarks.
Smith openly acknowledged his error, apologizing to Brunson, Hart, and the Knicks. “I was beyond wrong. I’m apologizing to this brother on national television; I’m apologizing to you; I’m apologizing to the entire Knicks organization,” he stated. Smith emphasized his lifelong support for the Knicks, highlighting his joy in witnessing their title victory.
Though apologetic, Smith suggested his critical stance contributed positively to the team’s advancement. “If it means another championship, I would do it again,” he asserted.
The podcast episode also included appearances by Karl-Anthony Towns, Miles McBride, and Carmelo Anthony. The discussion reflected on the Knicks’ journey to success.
