Australia’s World Cup team recently expressed dissatisfaction with referee Felix Zwayer’s performance following their 2-0 defeat against the U.S. Head coach Tony Popovic, assistant coach Paul Okon, and forward Nestory Irankunda all voiced concerns.
After the match, Irankunda commented negatively on Zwayer’s officiating, suggesting that decisions favored the U.S. team excessively. Irankunda remarked, “The ref was having a stinker today, but I mean it is what it is. He was giving every call to the USA.”
Popovic echoed these sentiments, stating, “I thought the referee gave too many fouls away, in all honesty.” Popovic emphasized that the game felt heavily biased against Australia.
Australia lodged complaints when the U.S. scored their second goal. Initially ruled offside, the goal was confirmed valid after a VAR review, prompting disputes from the Australians over impediments. Popovic questioned the decision post-game.
During halftime, Okon commented on the incident, mentioning goalkeeper Patrick Beach was likely impeded. Yet, VAR upheld the goal. This decision spurred further disagreement among Australian staff.
Despite frustrations, Popovic acknowledged Australia’s shortcomings, describing his players as “sluggish” and crediting the U.S. team for their dominance in match duels and ball control.
Moreover, referee Zwayer experienced physical strain towards the end of the match due to cramp, requiring assistance from players.
In this Group D standings, the U.S. leads with six points, while Australia holds second place with three.
