The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo has intensified, with confirmed cases reaching 1,003, including 254 fatalities. The Congo Ministry of Health reported that since the outbreak started on May 15 in Ituri province, 100 individuals have recovered. However, 365 patients remain hospitalized or isolated. The outbreak, triggered by the rare Bundibugyo virus, presents significant difficulties as there are no available vaccines or treatments.
Officials express uncertainty about the full extent of the outbreak, noting that undiscovered cases may exist with the peak yet to be reached. Contact tracing remains a critical hurdle, with local authorities achieving a 55% coverage rate. Dr. Jean Kaseya from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized the importance of identifying the index case, acknowledging the lack of clarity on the outbreak’s origin.
The identification of patient zero and tracking of over 35,000 contacts with infected persons remains undone, complicated by ongoing rebel violence in eastern Congo. The Allied Democratic Force, supported by ISIS, has disrupted access to villages, forcing residents into displacement camps or continual movement.
In Bunia, the capital of Ituri, concerns grow in the Kigonze displacement camp, where unusual deaths have raised alarm among the 20,000 displaced people. Although no Ebola cases were confirmed, the unprecedented death rate warrants further inquiry. This region houses over 2 million forcibly displaced people, including 320,000 refugees, who are vulnerable to Ebola.
The U.N. refugee agency highlighted the escalating threat of the virus to displaced communities, urging heightened attention. Charité Banza, a civil society leader in Ituri, warned of potential catastrophe should an epidemic strike his community, considering the already dire living conditions.
