Graduation Ceremony at Bard College’s High Schools Marred by Controversy
At a recent graduation ceremony, the outgoing president of Bard College faced strong opposition from students. This event took place at Bard-affiliated high schools in New York City and New Jersey.
Students strongly reacted to Leon Botstein’s presence, following revelations about his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. Mr. Botstein had previously shared his retirement plans but faced disapproval during his speech.
“To get anything done, you’re going to have to dance with the devil,” stated Mr. Botstein.
His advice aimed at addressing cooperation with challenging individuals elicited boos from the audience. The ceremony, held at United Palace in Upper Manhattan, saw students interrupting his speech numerous times. Attempting to advise against quick judgments, Mr. Botstein commented on the students’ reactions.
Jennifer Strodl, spokesperson for Bard College, emphasized that Mr. Botstein was not referencing Epstein directly. She clarified that the president’s statement highlighted the importance of dialogue within societies, even with opposing views.
Details emerged of Mr. Botstein’s past interactions with Epstein, spanning from 2012 until 2017. Despite warnings from senior faculty, Mr. Botstein maintained contact with Epstein.
The college released an official statement, stressing the necessity of engagement and discussions to prevent societal divisions. Yet, many students perceived Mr. Botstein’s remarks as linked to his connections with Epstein, leading to public discontent.
