The Senate approved a resolution seeking to block U.S. military action against Iran, reflecting growing concerns among lawmakers. The 50-48 vote was a significant shift from previous attempts. Although symbolic, the resolution highlights Republican discontent with President Trump’s handling of the conflict. The House had passed the resolution earlier.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the war, calling it a “historic blunder.” He noted that several Republicans often sided with Trump. Notably, Republicans Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Rand Paul, and Bill Cassidy supported the resolution, while Democrat John Fetterman opposed it. The absence of two Republican Senators, including Mitch McConnell, affected the majority.
The Pentagon is requesting $80 billion from Congress to cover war expenses and replenish stockpiles. Trump plans to meet GOP senators after Vice President JD Vance’s overseas negotiations. One senator privately stated Trump’s dissatisfaction with criticism over the Iran deal, which includes a $300 billion fund for Iran’s reconstruction.
Senator Ted Cruz expressed concerns about advice given to Trump regarding Iran on his podcast. Democrats have frequently initiated votes on Iran, aiming to halt military actions following missile strikes initiated by the U.S. and Israel. The Senate remains split, and Trump would likely veto any resolution.
The House’s approval of its version was seen as a symbolic statement against military actions. Senator Tim Kaine emphasized the timing for reassessment during the ceasefire. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is seeking a substantial funding increase for defense, as estimated war costs exceed initial projections.
The Pentagon’s funding request aligns with the White House’s larger budget proposal, which includes a significant defense spending increase. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized further spending on the operation. The Trump administration seeks $1.5 trillion for defense this year, leading to contentious legislative efforts.
