The U.S. Army Office of Special Trial Counsel (OSTC) announced the sentencing of Sgt. Quornelius S. Radford, 29, after a shooting incident at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Radford received six consecutive life sentences with the possibility of parole for attempting to murder five soldiers and his fiancé on August 6. In addition to his life sentences, Radford will forfeit all pay and allowances, be reduced in rank to E-1, and receive a dishonorable discharge. He will serve his sentence at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Radford was found guilty by a military judge for a shooting rampage targeting members of his unit. His actions resulted in profound betrayal, as highlighted by Maj. Matthew Fields, an OSTC prosecutor. Fields stated that soldiers are trained to face external dangers, not threats from within their ranks. Radford’s actions severely damaged the trust needed in military organizations.
Ryan O’Connor, Army CID special agent in charge, emphasized the conviction as evidence of the branch’s dedication to maintaining the safety of service members. The incident unfolded after Radford had an argument with his fiancé, who followed him to the military base, fearing he was suicidal. The confrontation escalated in the parking lot, resulting in Radford shooting his fiancé with a personal firearm before entering an office where he shot four soldiers and attempted to shoot a fifth.
Fellow soldiers quickly intervened and subdued Radford, preventing further casualties. First aid was administered by soldiers until emergency services arrived. Testimonies during the trial described the enduring trauma the victims faced, with all expressing that Radford deserved the maximum sentence. Six victims survived but carry the emotional and physical scars from the attack.
