Young Archaeologist Discovers Rare Gemstone at Ancient Biblical Site
A sixth-grade student made a significant archaeological discovery at a historical site linked to Jesus’ ministry in Galilee. This find, reported by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA) in early June, took place at Korazim National Park, near the Sea of Galilee.
Korazim, which corresponds with the biblical village of Chorazin, is noted in the New Testament as a community that witnessed Jesus’ miracles but did not repent. It is situated approximately two miles north of Capernaum, an ancient fishing village central to Jesus’ ministry.
The rare gemstone, dating back to the sixth century A.D., features a striking pale-blue center. It was discovered by Alon Horowitz, a 12-year-old student from the Ramat Korazim Regional Elementary School near Elifelet, during an excavation program organized by the INPA in collaboration with Ariel University.
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority reported the finding took place just minutes before the end of a three-day dig.
Horowitz explained, “About 10 minutes before we finished, I was digging with my trowel and suddenly saw something blue, round, and special.” He expressed pride and happiness upon realizing the significance of his find, receiving considerable admiration from his peers and family.
The director of excavations, Achia Kohn-Tavor, suggested the gemstone was likely part of an affluent local’s jewelry collection. He identified the gemstone as a Nicolo, a rare type of agate considered a luxury item during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
The presence of this non-local stone suggests that its owner had access to international luxury goods via extensive trade routes. This finding hints at the lifestyle and wealth of those residing in the region during ancient times.
Remarkably, young Israeli individuals have made other significant discoveries in recent years. In May, an 8-year-old boy from Rehovot discovered a 1,700-year-old Roman statuette fragment. Additionally, a 3-year-old girl found a 3,800-year-old Canaanite amulet near Tel Azeka last year.
