Trump Addresses Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
President Donald Trump has addressed recent concerns about vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Speaking during the launch of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington, D.C., Trump described the pool as “perfect” despite the reported damage. He noted that while the pool had been “gruesomely vandalized by thugs,” it now looks good.
“The Reflecting Pool that you’ve heard so much about, which is so incredible, it’s been gruesomely vandalized,” Trump said. He reassured his audience that restoration efforts are underway, and that the damage will soon be fully repaired.
Trump also mentioned, “I looked at it just a little while ago. It looks perfect already. But we’re fixing it.” He reported that those responsible have mostly been caught and are facing prosecution.
Newsweek contacted the White House for further comments on Wednesday night. The president’s remarks follow reports of algae blooms and other issues at the pool. Trump’s administration attributes these problems to vandalism.
Trump claimed that vandals used chemicals and cut a 350-foot gash into the pool’s lining. He shared on Truth Social that the surface was damaged, noting, “This is the hard rubber surface — No Paint — Before the Vandals cut and pulled it apart!”
Security around the Reflecting Pool has increased recently, with more fencing now in place. The Interior Department indicated that these measures were planned in advance of Independence Day, but advanced due to the vandalism by activists.
Allegations about the vandalism remain under investigation as the administration has not released evidence to support these claims. Trump’s comments came as he focused on restoring the beauty of the nation’s capital amid the upcoming anniversary celebrations.
Senator’s Response
Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has questioned the Trump administration over the Reflecting Pool’s renovation. He is seeking information about the contractors involved, as ongoing issues persist with the project.
Blumenthal, the senior senator from Connecticut, has expressed concerns over contracts awarded to firms allegedly connected to Trump. He questioned whether these contractors are qualified and if taxpayer dollars are being misused.
In a letter addressed to John J. Cafaro and Greenwater Services CEO Al George, Blumenthal criticized the allegedly flawed work by Greenwater. He cited recurring algae blooms as evidence of the unsatisfactory renovation, raising concerns about potential favoritism in contract awards.
This story continues to develop and will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
