A tragic carriage accident led to serious discussions about the future of horse-drawn carriages in Central Park. The rides had a brief suspension after Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old, fell from a carriage and died. This event triggered the City Council’s consideration of a ban on such carriages, scheduled for debate next month.
Christina Hansen, a carriage drivers’ union spokeswoman, was feeding her horse Joker when confronted with accusations of animal maltreatment in Central Park. Hansen reported the incident to the police, and the accuser left the scene.
This confrontation occurred during a tense period following the voluntary shutdown initiated by the drivers’ union. The union paused services for safety reassessments after Mahajan’s tragic fall on June 17. The Central Park Conservancy noted this was the first human fatality in such an accident at the park.
Efforts to prohibit horse carriages in New York City have gained momentum post-accident. City Council Speaker Julie Menin announced a hearing for a pre-existing bill aimed at banning these carriages by June 2028. Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed support, emphasizing collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for workers as they phase out horse-drawn carriages.
