The White House’s approach to Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon has shifted. U.S. President Donald Trump proposed an unexpected alternative – allowing Syria to address the Iran-backed militant group.
Trump’s Proposal
Trump believes that Syria, under the governance of insurgents who turned against previous President Bashar Assad, could effectively deal with Hezbollah. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, however, has rejected involvement, stating Trump’s remarks were misunderstood. Yet, Trump persists with the idea.
The proposal’s seriousness remains uncertain, but the possibility of Syrian intervention has alarmed Lebanon and Israel. Relations between Turkey and Syria are already tense, with both countries wary of each other’s influence.
Reactions and Meetings
Top Israeli security officials held a meeting about the situation, according to an unnamed source. Trump’s dissatisfaction emerges from the prolonged conflict, which has resulted in significant casualties.
“You don’t have to knock down an apartment house every time you’re looking for somebody,” Trump said, emphasizing his belief that Syria might be more efficient.
The White House declined to comment further, referring back to Trump’s initial statements.
Syria’s Stance
Syria has dismissed notions of intervening in Lebanon. Al-Sharaa stated in Damascus that Syria aims for a permanent halt to the war and fostering economic ties with Lebanon.
During an interview, al-Sharaa clarified that Trump’s statements were misunderstood, denying any intent to invade Lebanon.
Despite Hezbollah’s earlier interventions in Syria’s civil war, Syria’s current leadership focuses on nation-building rather than regional conflicts. The country remains neutral amid rising regional tensions.
Syria’s military did take steps to secure its border with Lebanon, aiming to prevent weapon smuggling and conflict spillover. A brief tension with Hezbollah over alleged border shelling was quickly diffused, reportedly with Turkey’s assistance.
Al-Sharaa labeled Hezbollah’s past involvement in Syria’s conflict as a mistake but is open to discussions with the group.
Political Ramifications
Trump’s proposal revives sectarian fears and memories of Syrian occupation in Lebanon. An anonymous U.S. official emphasizes that any suggestion of Syrian intervention stems from misunderstanding the ground realities. Syria’s military comprises diverse and uncertain elements, complicating its potential role in foreign conflicts.
Following Assad’s fall in Syria, sectarian violence occurred, heightening cross-border fears in Lebanon. Many Lebanese recall Syria’s past occupation and remain wary of its political resurgence.
While Israel monitors the developments, its primary focus remains on the threat from Hezbollah.
