Serena Williams has made a return to the Centre Court at Wimbledon, marking her comeback to singles tennis after a four-year break. She is set to face 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint in an eagerly awaited opening-round match.
Williams, who boasts seven Wimbledon singles titles, is playing her first singles match since her last appearance at the 2022 U.S. Open. Before this, she resumed tennis with doubles matches earlier in the month.
According to Jon Wertheim from Sports Illustrated, Williams’ presence greatly impacts the event. He shared with NPR’s Morning Edition, “She is still Serena Williams. Her aura will almost matter as much as everything else.” While he believes an eighth title might be difficult, he is optimistic about her succeeding in her opening match.
In the broader women’s category, competition remains fierce. Top contenders include Aryna Sabalenka, reigning champion Iga Świątek, and American Jessica Pegula.
On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner is the defending champion. Despite an unsteady five-set win in his first match, he is favored to lead. Wertheim also highlights American players Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, forecasting a significant showing for the U.S. at Wimbledon in 2026.
