Columbus Faces Criticism Over Somali Flag Raising
The city of Columbus, Ohio, which hosts one of the largest Somali populations in the U.S., is under scrutiny due to a social media post celebrating the raising of the Somali flag. On Wednesday, the Columbus Rec & Parks department shared a post on Platform X stating: “Happy Somali Independence Day!” in honor of the 1960 unification of Somaliland’s territories into the Somali Republic. City Hall marked the occasion by raising the Somali flag.
This gesture quickly garnered attention from conservative figures on social media who questioned the city’s decision to celebrate Somali independence, especially when American independence is also commemorated closely with its 250th anniversary.
“Columbus, Ohio raising the flag of Somalia for America’s 250th anniversary,” commented Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, on Platform X.
The decision to raise a foreign flag on a government building was met with strong reactions. Journalist Mark Hemingway criticized the move, claiming it was inappropriate for any American government building to hoist another country’s flag. Attorney and political commentator Mehek Cooke expressed disapproval, stating that Ohio officials are placing greater significance on foreign nationalism than American patriotism.
“City Hall is not a foreign embassy,” Cooke posted. “As an Ohioan, I am repulsed by the anti-Americanism here. Our leaders treat foreign nationalism as sacred while treating American patriotism as controversial. America’s public buildings should honor America.”
Other social media users echoed similar sentiments, perceiving the act as cultural surrender. ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel argued that raising the Somali flag at City Hall represents a refusal to uphold American values.
“This is AMERICA, not Little Somalia,” Gabriel posted on X. “Flying the Somali flag at City Hall isn’t ‘celebration.’ It’s cultural surrender. Other nations aren’t parallel cultures here to dominate ours. Remove that flag. Remove the officials who demand it.”
Concerns of fraud within the Somali community in Columbus were also raised. Investigative reporter Luke Rosiak questioned why Columbus would celebrate Somalia’s territorial unification when American independence anniversary was imminent. Federalist reporter Brianna Lyman’s response went further, suggesting deportation for those who supposedly refused assimilation.
“Why the f— is Columbus, Ohio celebrating ‘the unification of the Trust Territory of Somaliland…’ when America turns 250 this week?” Brianna Lyman posted.
Ohio Republican State Representative Brian Stewart mentioned the flag raising as another example of encouraging non-assimilation. Fox News Digital attempted reaching out to Columbus officials for a comment.
