Trump Administration’s Changes to Gun Regulations
The Trump administration is rolling back more than three dozen firearms regulations. These changes include ending efforts to curb illegal sales, reinstating gun rights for some individuals previously deemed ineligible due to mental health issues, and reducing oversight on private weapons transactions. This shift was not entirely unforeseen, as President Trump made gun rights a central part of his campaign.
Critics, including some veterans of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), argue that these adjustments prioritize the preferences of firearm owners and manufacturers at the cost of public safety. This concern arises at a time when the bureau faces additional challenges, with many officials being reassigned to immigration enforcement duties.
Supporters of the regulatory changes highlight that many of these reversals return regulations to their previous state before President Joseph R. Biden’s tenure. Under Biden, new gun control laws were enacted following several mass shooting incidents, marking a significant departure from decades of legislative standoff concerning firearm regulation.
The divisive perspectives on these policy changes underscore the complexities of gun regulation. Kris Brown, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, expressed that while Biden’s regulations seemed progressive, the Trump administration’s initiatives could significantly hinder the ATF’s regulatory capabilities, likening it to setting back progress by a century.
