In Tel Aviv, Israel, there are claims that a prominent Palestinian doctor has suffered mistreatment while in detention. Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, detained by Israeli forces 18 months ago, is reportedly in critical condition. His lawyer and a human rights group are raising concerns about his treatment.
Dr. Abu Safiya previously led the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. He became widely recognized for his efforts during the conflict between Israel and Hamas, advocating for medical aid during a prolonged Israeli military siege.
Since being arrested in December 2024, Abu Safiya has not been officially charged. The Israeli military states that he is under investigation for potential ties to Hamas. However, those who have worked alongside him refute these allegations.
Hussam Abu Safiya’s attorney, Nasser Odeh, and the group Physicians for Human Rights Israel report that Abu Safiya appeared frail and struggled to sit upright during a recent visit. They witnessed injuries on his head and difficulties in breathing.
These concerns were detailed last month when Odeh contested Abu Safiya’s ongoing detention without charges before Israel’s Supreme Court. Appearing briefly via video, Abu Safiya looked pale and emaciated.
The Israeli Prison Service dismisses the allegations of mistreatment, insisting that detainees receive proper care in line with health ministry guidelines.
Israel’s approach to Palestinian detainees has been under scrutiny since the conflict with Hamas began in October 2023. Rights groups and the UN have pointed out systematic abuse issues.
An increase in Palestinian detentions occurred following the outset of the war, with many held under challenging conditions.
The war initiated on October 7, 2023, after Hamas conducted an attack on southern Israel, leaving many dead and some taken hostage. The ensuing conflict has resulted in substantial casualties according to Gaza’s health ministry.
