Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, faced backlash over the Fourth of July weekend. She traveled to Mallorca, Spain, for an Islamic ‘spiritual wellness’ retreat while the nation marked its 250th anniversary.
The New York Post reported Duwaji was seen at Newark International Airport before flying to Mallorca. The retreat was organized by The Women Sanctuary and had sold out. This decision drew criticism from some New York City council members and public figures.
Councilwoman Joann Ariola, R-Queens, stated, “Nothing says ‘America 250’ quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation.” Her remarks suggested Duwaji’s actions were inconsistent with honoring the country’s milestone.
Similarly, Councilman Frank Morano, R-Staten Island, criticized Duwaji’s absence during such an important civic event. He acknowledged that public officials’ families can take vacations but highlighted the significance of attending the city’s festivities.
“It’s disappointing that the First Lady chose to be overseas instead of participating in a major civic event,” Morano told The Post. He emphasized that it was a time to show support for both the city and the country.
Responses and Reactions
The mayor’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s inquiries. However, they confirmed Duwaji traveled without her taxpayer-funded NYPD security.
Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler criticized the timing of Duwaji’s trip. She tweeted about Duwaji boarding a flight while her husband urged New Yorkers to save energy during a heat wave.
About the Retreat
The Women Sanctuary hosted the “Plants Of The Quran | 6th Edition” retreat in Mallorca. It focused on plants like olives, pomegranates, dates, and figs, and included workshops and spiritual activities.
In contrast, Mayor Mamdani stayed in New York City. During the heat wave and America 250 events, his office expanded cooling centers and extended pool hours. They also encouraged energy conservation by suggesting setting thermostats to 78 degrees during peak times.
