Allegations Against Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Lead to Turmoil
A woman who previously dated Graham Platner, a Maine Democratic Senate candidate, accused him of forcing her into non-consensual sex while he was drunk. This was reported by Politico and has led to significant political fallout.
Platner denies the allegations. He acknowledged the potential impact on his campaign and stated a need to consider his next steps. In a social media video, Platner asserted, “Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically false.”
Jenny Racicot, a resident of Maine, recounted to Politico that Platner entered her home in 2021 while drunk and committed the alleged assault. Despite their on-and-off relationship, Racicot ceased contact with Platner after the incident. Politico reported that Racicot told Platner the event was non-consensual. Efforts by The Associated Press to contact Racicot for further comment have not yet been successful.
The allegation has led to withdrawal of endorsements from key supporters. Rep. Ro Khanna of California, who had previously backed Platner despite past controversies, stated that these allegations crossed a red line and withdrew his endorsement. Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona and the group End Citizens United have also revoked their support for Platner.
Platner decisively won the Democratic primary in April. However, Maine law permits replacement of candidates if they withdraw by July 13, with a substitute required by July 27. Platner has already canceled several campaign events in Maine.
Platner’s candidacy was supported by the party’s left wing, despite his controversial history. His background includes a chest tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol and controversial social media statements. There have also been reports of Platner sexting with women shortly after marriage.
Supporters such as Hasan Piker, a leftist commentator, have reconsidered their stance following the allegations. Piker declared on Twitch that this incident is “irredeemable.”
Gov. Janet Mills, who had withdrawn from the primary race due to funding issues, has also refrained from endorsing Platner. Possible replacements for Platner include Troy Jackson, a former State Senator, and Shenna Bellows, Secretary of State.
