Trevor Bauer, the former Cy Young Award winner, encountered a serious setback on Wednesday afternoon. The pitcher, who has been largely sidelined by Major League Baseball, became involved in a severe accident in Arizona. While driving his black McLaren through a street in Phoenix, Bauer faced an unexpected collision.
Bauer, 35, has not appeared in the major leagues since playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. Recently, he has been pitching for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League. His most recent performance featured him striking out ten batters against the Lexington Legends.
According to TMZ, Bauer was traveling at the permitted speed limit of 45 mph and was not responsible for the accident. Emergency responders confirmed that none of the individuals involved needed hospitalization. Bauer emerged from the incident unharmed.
This is not Bauer’s first encounter with misfortune involving a McLaren. In 2019, a tire from a semi-truck bounced into a dealership and damaged his parked 2016 McLaren 650S.
Once celebrated for winning a Cy Young Award and signing a $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bauer’s career took a difficult turn in 2021. He faced sexual assault allegations from accuser Lindsey Hill, which led to significant media attention. Though he was never criminally charged and has claimed his innocence, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred initially suspended him for 324 games. An arbitrator later reduced this suspension to 194 games.
Despite never facing criminal charges, Bauer has been regarded unfavorably by all 30 MLB front offices. Over the past few years, he has played outside the MLB spotlight. Currently, Bauer is with the Long Island Ducks, holding a 4-1 record and a 2.43 ERA. Ironically, he was in Arizona to address back spasms.
Bauer has been openly campaigning for another opportunity in Major League Baseball, even offering to play for the league’s minimum salary. Having survived the controversy that stalled his career, he remains determined to make a comeback in the major leagues.
