West Nile Virus Case Detected in New York City

New York City health officials have reported the first human West Nile virus (WNV) case of 2026. This highlights the need for residents to guard against mosquito bites, especially during the summer months. According to the New York City Department of Health, the person was infected after spending time outdoors in New York City and in other areas outside the city. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in all five boroughs since June, with over 1,000 infected mosquito pools identified citywide this year.

What Is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans via mosquito bites from infected mosquitoes. It does not spread between people. It’s the primary cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S., typically emerging during warmer months when mosquitoes are abundant.

In New York City, mosquitoes with West Nile virus appear every year from June to October, with peak activity in August and September.

States Reporting West Nile Cases

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that 222 human West Nile virus cases were reported nationwide in 2026 across 32 states, now 33 with New York’s latest case. Most cases have occurred in Arizona, Texas, and California.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus

Many infected with West Nile virus show no symptoms. Some may experience mild illness that includes:

• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Fatigue
• Skin rash

These symptoms can last days or weeks and resemble other viral infections.

From 2012 to 2021, New York City saw an average of 16 annual West Nile neuroinvasive disease cases. Between 2022 and 2025, this rose to 31 cases per year.

A small percentage experience severe illness called West Nile neuroinvasive disease, impacting the brain and spinal cord. This U.S. has reported 156 such cases in 2026, based on CDC data. The NYC Health Department notes that about 1 in 150 infected individuals may develop this grave illness, which can lead to mental status changes and muscle weakness, necessitating hospitalization.

In some instances, the disease is fatal. While many recover completely, others face long-term health issues or permanent disability.

Who Is Most at Risk?

Older adults and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness. People aged 65 and older are thrice as likely to develop neurologic disease from West Nile compared to younger people. Those with chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease also face increased risk.

If You Have Symptoms

The NYC Health Department urges anyone with West Nile-like symptoms to contact a healthcare provider. Individuals with serious symptoms such as confusion, severe weakness, or neurological issues should seek medical care immediately. Early assessment helps rule out other diseases and provides necessary supportive treatment.

Protective Measures

With no specific treatment or vaccine for West Nile virus available for the public, prevention is key. Health officials advise using EPA-registered insect repellents with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Additional preventive measures include:

• Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and shoes outdoors.
• Limiting outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Installing and repairing window and door screens.
• Eliminating stagnant water in containers like buckets, flowerpots, birdbaths, and gutters.
• Maintaining swimming pools, hot tubs, and ornamental ponds to hinder mosquito breeding.

NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin stated, “West Nile virus is spread by mosquito bites and cannot spread from person to person. The good news is it’s preventable,” urging residents to take precautions during mosquito season.

This new case underlines the fact that while most infections are mild or symptom-free, the virus can severely affect vulnerable groups, making mosquito bite prevention crucial as summer ends.
