Racing Preparations for Businesses
The Chicago Marathon is a major event impacting local businesses. Tens of thousands of runners will participate, and for many establishments, the day before the marathon is crucial. Maurizio Michi, owner of the Italian restaurant Sofi, highlights that Saturday is their busiest day of the year. Located near Grant Park, Sofi fills its seats as runners seek carbohydrate-rich meals. Michi states, “We never disappoint,” addressing the demand for nutrition.
Economic Boost
The marathon significantly boosts the local economy. An independent study indicated last year’s marathon contributed nearly $756 million to the Chicago metropolitan area. More than 75% of over 55,000 runners traveled from out of state, supporting local hotels, restaurants, and businesses. Choose Chicago estimates that 1.7 million spectators lined the course. Tim Little of Bank of America explains how the route through 29 neighborhoods spreads economic impact by encouraging exploration.
Restaurant Dynamics
Angel Diaz, owner of Frida Room, describes marathon day as nonstop. Sofi’s staff takes fueling athletes seriously, increasing pasta portion sizes and ingredient orders. Runners tend to dine early, between 4 and 7 p.m., avoiding alcohol, according to Michi. Intelligentsia Coffee, a local chain, serves coffee to volunteers arriving at 3 a.m. on Sunday, with locations near the race route and a coffee truck setup on race day. Haughey, Intelligentsia’s VP of operations, emphasizes the company’s commitment to supporting local events.
Innovative Strategies
BellyBowl, an Asian-style restaurant, saw profits double last year at its South Loop location on marathon day. Ivan Williams and Stephanie Gong, co-owners, note increased visits from racers’ families and local residents. With high demand, BellyBowl enhances customer service using multiple delivery robots. Williams states, “When it’s super busy, it’s very helpful,” describing robots supplementing an expanded staff. The marathon continues to bring new customers to the restaurant, contributing to annual growth.
