Toshifumi Suzuki, a pioneering figure who transformed the convenience store industry in Japan, passed away on May 18. He was 93. His profound impact on 7-Eleven Japan is remembered by many.
Seven & i Holdings confirmed Mr. Suzuki’s death, attributing it to heart failure, though details of his passing remain private. During his four-decade leadership, Mr. Suzuki expanded a single Tokyo store into an expansive empire with thousands of outlets across the nation.
Renowned for his innovative approach, Mr. Suzuki introduced numerous features that became standard in Japanese convenience stores. His initiatives ranged from offering banking services to creating popular items like seaweed-wrapped rice balls, enhancing the convenience store experience both domestically and internationally.
Since Mr. Suzuki stepped down in 2016, 7-Eleven has faced challenges in sustaining its prior success. Issues such as flat profits, a contested takeover attempt by a Canadian competitor, and the search for a new CEO to drive growth have surfaced. Concerns have been expressed within the company regarding a perceived decline in innovation and creativity since Mr. Suzuki’s departure.
Originally from Nagano Prefecture, north of Tokyo, Mr. Suzuki’s career started in the publishing sector. He later joined Ito-Yokado, a leading retail company, as a director in 1971, guided by the founder Masatoshi Ito.
While traveling, Mr. Suzuki discovered 7-Eleven stores in the U.S., managed by the Southland Corporation in Dallas. He recognized the potential for this model in Japan, despite prevailing skepticism about the adoption of American-style convenience stores in a market traditionally dominated by small, family-run shops.
