Gov. Mikie Sherrill Joins Protest Against Immigration Policies
Gov. Mikie Sherrill recently participated in a protest outside a New Jersey detention center. This action highlights her ongoing conflicts with President Trump’s immigration strategies. The protest occurred at Delaney Hall, where detainees are engaging in a hunger strike.
Sherrill, a Democrat, has expressed her opposition to how the Trump administration manages immigration. During the protest, she listened to grievances from detainees’ families regarding poor food quality and lack of medical care. Protesters held signs, played drums, and chanted for the release of detainees.
In her address, Gov. Sherrill emphasized that everyone deserves respectful treatment, regardless of immigration status. She interacted personally with attendees, providing comfort to emotional family members during the Memorial Day event.
Gov. Sherrill’s differences with the Trump administration are not new. In April, a lawsuit was filed against her by the administration. The case challenged a New Jersey law stopping law enforcement, including ICE agents, from wearing masks while on duty.
The Delaney Hall detention center, housing up to 1,000 beds, has become central in discussions about Trump’s immigration policies. The facility hosts immigrants detained across New York City and the Northeast, reflecting increased arrest rates by ICE agents in various locations.
This protest marks at least the second legal confrontation between the Trump administration and Sherrill over New Jersey’s immigration policies.
