In a commanding performance, the New York Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 130-93 on Monday night, securing a four-game sweep in the Eastern Conference finals. This victory marked the Knicks’ first return to the NBA Finals since 1999.
Karl-Anthony Towns shone with 19 points and 14 rebounds. OG Anunoby added 17 points, while Landry Shamet contributed 16 off the bench. Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson each scored 15 points. The Knicks’ victory extended their postseason winning streak to 11 games, becoming the fourth team to achieve this feat. Golden State previously had a 15-game winning streak in 2017.
The Knicks won most games by double digits, with an average victory margin of 23.7 points. “I feel like the word ‘hope’ has been gone from the New York Knicks name for a long time and for me to be part of this team that revives hope is something special,” Towns stated.
Coach Mike Brown praised his team’s performance, highlighting their dominance in offensive rebounds and fast break points. “Our guys played great. You’re in the conference finals and score 65 points off of offensive rebounds and fast break points,” Brown noted. The Knicks outscored the Cavaliers 32-5 in second-chance points and led 33-9 in fast break points.
New York’s large fan contingent, featuring celebrities like Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Timothée Chalamet, and Kylie Jenner, celebrated the victory loudly. The Knicks now await their Finals opponent, either the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs. The Western Conference finals is tied 2-2, with Game 5 in Oklahoma City approaching.
Historically, this marks the Knicks’ third finals appearance since their 1973 title. Legendary figures Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Patrick Ewing presented the team with the Bob Cousy Trophy. It’s noteworthy that Coach Brown reached the finals in his first year with the Knicks, a feat achieved only 15 times since the NBA-ABA merger in 1976.
The Knicks have convincingly won all three of their clinching playoff games, each by at least 30 points. Brunson received MVP honors for the series, averaging 25.5 points and 7.8 assists.
Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 31 points. Despite the sweep—their first since the 2018 NBA Finals—Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged the Knicks’ superior performance. “They’re playing better basketball. You got to give them credit. They’re on a heater,” Atkinson commented.
The Cavaliers began strong, leading early, but the Knicks swiftly took control. A pivotal 20-0 run late in the first quarter solidified their lead. By halftime, New York was ahead 68-49, routinely demonstrating their ability to build and maintain significant leads.
Despite overcoming struggles, James Harden reflected on missed chances, particularly after blowing a 22-point lead in Game 1. “Yes, it was 4-0, but we didn’t give ourselves a chance. Genuinely, I think we are the better team, but series wise we didn’t show it,” Harden lamented.
