Controversial Results and Tensions at Enhanced Games
The Enhanced Games in Las Vegas saw controversy during the 100-meter sprint when Fred Kerley, an athlete reportedly not using performance-enhancing drugs, claimed victory. This event, promoting the use of such substances, was labeled a contentious initiative. Performance-enhancing drugs have typically been banned in professional sports due to concerns about unfair advantages.
Fred Kerley ran 100 meters in 9.97 seconds, winning $250,000. Previously, Kerley had asserted that Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds would be surpassed. At the Paris Olympics, Kerley recorded a faster time of 9.81 seconds, securing a bronze medal. However, in Las Vegas, his performance would not have reached the podium at a major international event.
Kerley’s Reaction
After the race, Kerley commented in an interview, “They gotta do better than that. They need to train a little harder and go a little harder some more.” This statement sparked a reaction from fellow sprinter Marvin Bracy-Williams, who criticized Kerley for being disrespectful. “He’s disrespecting the whole reason we’re here,” Bracy-Williams said. Bracy-Williams finished third with a time of 10.39 seconds, earning $75,000.
Responding to Bracy-Williams, Kerley said, “I’m here to disrespect the field. I’m not here to be buddies. There’s money on the line. There’s nobody that’s going to take money out of my pocket. I got kids to feed.” Kerley, 31, is an experienced Olympic sprinter with numerous accolades, including bronze and silver medals. Despite his achievements, he is currently under a two-year ban due to missed drug tests, although this does not prove drug use.
Understanding the Enhanced Games
The Enhanced Games, according to Newsweek, are designed to allow both drug-free athletes and those using legal performance-enhancing substances to compete. The events include swimming, track, and weightlifting. This format has sparked debate, as many sports continue to battle covert use of banned substances.
In 2025, the Enhanced Games secured substantial financial support, backed by a multi-million-dollar investment from 1789 Capital, co-founded by Omeed Malik and Christopher Buskirk, with Donald Trump Jr. as a partner. Dr. Aron D’Souza, president of the Enhanced Games, emphasized the importance of such validation. The games also have financial backing from tech billionaire Peter Thiel.
