A Canadian teenager has been charged with arson after allegedly setting a fire to a charter bus that belonged to an American professional baseball team. The incident occurred during the team’s road trip to Winnipeg, Canada.
Incident Overview
The Kane County Cougars, an independent professional baseball team from the U.S., were traveling in Canada to play against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. On May 21, law enforcement responded to a fire involving the team’s bus outside Blue Cross Park. The Winnipeg Police Service concluded the fire was deliberately ignited.
Investigation and Charges
Initially, two teenagers were taken into custody. Among them, a 15-year-old girl was charged with arson causing damage to property and possession of incendiary materials. She was later released to a responsible adult, according to the police.
The Winnipeg Police Service stated, “The entire bus and contents were destroyed.”
Impact and Reactions
The destruction of the 56-seat bus and equipment carries an estimated damage cost of approximately $425,000.
Jackson Greteman, operations manager for Windstar, expressed his disappointment, saying, “We are very disappointed that this could happen to our family-owned company, and the loss of this vehicle will impact our business and operations.” He noted the relief that no one was hurt in what he termed a reckless act of vandalism. The company is cooperating with local authorities as investigations continue.
Authorities have not disclosed a potential motive for the act, and the situation remains under investigation.
