At least 23 people lost their lives and approximately 70 others were injured in a devastating attack on Sunday morning. A suicide bomber targeted a passenger train in Pakistan, according to reports from The Associated Press (AP).
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Balochistan province. An explosives-laden vehicle detonated near a railway line as the train passed, causing severe damage. Two train cars overturned and caught fire. This region is often troubled by ongoing insurgency from separatist and militant groups.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant separatist group, claimed responsibility. They stated their target was a train carrying security personnel.
The Times of India reported the train was transporting army personnel and their families from Quetta to Peshawar for Eid holidays. Meanwhile, AP noted the BLA targeted a train carrying security forces. The affected area maintains a strong security presence.
Impact and Aftermath
Witnesses and images shared on social media showed the blast caused two train cars to overturn and catch fire, releasing thick black smoke. Nearby structures sustained significant damage, and over a dozen vehicles were impacted.
Several victims received treatment at local hospitals. Among the wounded, around 20 were in critical condition. Doctors provided these updates to the AP.
Government Reaction
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, labeling it a “cowardly act of terrorism.” He vowed justice for the attackers.
“I strongly condemn the heinous bomb explosion near Chaman Phatak, Quetta, which has resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives and left many others injured. Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan,” Sharif said.
Sharif extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished a swift recovery for the injured. He emphasized the nation’s solidarity with Balochistan during this crisis.
Accusations of Foreign Involvement
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti accused Indian-sponsored proxies of backing the group. The two countries have a long-standing conflict over Kashmir claims. India has denied these accusations.
“The terrorists of Fitna Al-Hindustan are proving their savagery by targeting innocent civilians, women, and children,” Bugti stated.
He asserted there would be no sanctuary for terrorists in Balochistan, promising to pursue perpetrators until all are captured.
Recent History of Violence
The BLA has intensified its suicide operations against Pakistani security forces and infrastructure in Quetta. In 2024, a suicide bombing at a train station in Balochistan claimed the lives of at least 26 people, including soldiers.
