NYC Mayor Urges End to ICE Activities After Bronx Shooting
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on President Donald Trump to cease all ICE enforcement activities in the state following a controversial shooting involving a federal agent in the Bronx. The incident has led to widespread protests and altercations with law enforcement.
After the shooting, Mamdani held a news conference where he criticized the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He mentioned speaking with Trump for two hours, attempting unsuccessfully to secure the release of the man who was shot. Mamdani expressed a strong desire to see ICE agents leave New York City, stating, “All they do is terrorize this city.”
ICE is rotten to its core,Mamdani remarked, accusing the agency of acting “with impunity” and spreading fear across the nation.
In the wake of the incident, New York Governor Kathy Hochul also reached out to Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. She communicated her discontent with the ICE operations in New York and advocated for the public release of any body camera footage related to the shooting.
The shooting took place during an attempted arrest of a man from the Dominican Republic who was wanted by authorities. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the man had a history of grand larceny and other criminal activities. ICE agents rendered aid at the scene, and the wounded individual was taken to a local hospital. DHS confirmed he had gang affiliations and listed prior offenses as part of the ongoing investigation.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided further details, identifying the man as a 28-year-old with a young child in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. She confirmed the child was unharmed and is now with family members. Evidence showed an ICE agent fired shots that wounded the driver.
The incident drew hundreds of protesters to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where the injured man was receiving medical care. Demonstrators, chanting slogans like “ICE off our streets” and “No justice, no peace,” demanded action and accountability. The protest saw exchanges between officers and protesters, with some arrested and barricades erected to manage the crowd.
The Department of Homeland Security is investigating the event, with involvement from the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations. The situation remains developing, with more information to be released as it becomes available.
