The Philadelphia Eagles have placed their quarterback, Jalen Hurts, on injured reserve following the diagnosis of a superficial blood clot. Hurts is set to miss at least four games.
On Thursday, the Eagles shared a statement regarding Hurts’ health condition. The statement detailed that Hurts had been undergoing treatment for about a week and had traveled to and from London during this period. Despite his condition, Hurts participated in the team’s game in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars and even practiced fully on Wednesday.
As per the team’s announcement, Hurts will not participate in Sunday’s game. On October 8th, Hurts visited the training room post-practice, seeking treatment for his calf. The quarterback disclosed that he had been cleated during the previous game against the Los Angeles Rams on October 4th. The calf injury received its first treatment session after the game, although Hurts practiced fully on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, he continued receiving treatment, practiced fully, and was subsequently added to the practice report.
Following the team’s journey to London and walkthrough, an ultrasound was conducted on Saturday. This examination revealed the presence of a superficial blood clot. The medical staff and physicians in London reviewed the ultrasound outcomes and determined that maintaining activity and mobility was crucial. Hurts was deemed fit to play safely. Doctors recommended another ultrasound within 72 hours, following Hurts’ return to Philadelphia.
Hurts played without restrictions on Sunday, received further treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced fully once more on Wednesday, as outlined in the practice report. Throughout the London stay and the week after, the Eagles maintained communication with the league office concerning the issue.
On Wednesday night, a subsequent ultrasound demonstrated movement within the small blood clot. Consequently, Hurts is set to miss the Sunday game against the Carolina Panthers as the team concludes on the suitable treatment path. Ensuring Hurts’ health and safety remains paramount.
Due to the injury, Hurts will miss multiple games, including those against NFC East rivals. He can return in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, coinciding with Philadelphia’s Week 10 bye.
Blood clots are potentially dangerous since they can obstruct blood flow to critical organs, posing risks of pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. They may also harm tissue or prove fatal without timely intervention.
Philadelphia’s backup quarterback, Tanner McKee, a third-year veteran, is now expected to start against the Panthers. McKee has previously started two games, where the team experienced both victory and defeat.
The Eagles, facing challenges, have also been without players DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley.
