In a recent interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent issued a warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Bessent’s comments followed Zelensky’s claim that U.S. intelligence sharing was interrupted during Russian missile attacks.
Zelensky stated that intelligence sharing was temporarily blocked, leaving Ukraine without critical U.S. intelligence for three days during Russian missile strikes. Although restored, the interruption was significant, with Ukraine relying on European allies for intelligence during the gap. Zelensky expressed gratitude for the resumed aid but stressed how unique U.S. capabilities are in detecting missile launches.
Bessent, in a separate interview, refuted Zelensky’s accusation, stating that President Trump and Secretary Rubio denied any involvement in the disruption. He urged Zelensky to be cautious with such allegations, despite admitting he did not know the reason for the disruption.
The discussion highlights the crucial role of U.S. intelligence in Ukraine’s defense, as other forms of support have diminished. European intelligence provides some assistance, but U.S. capabilities are essential for early detection of missile launches.
Reports indicated issues before the interviews, with Ukrainian officials noting a lack of advance warnings for missile attacks earlier in the week. The cause remains unclear, though Bessent reiterated the Trump administration’s denial of ordering the blockage.
Welker asked Bessent about the U.S.-Ukraine alliance. Bessent described support the U.S. provides to Ukraine, implying allyship without a direct confirmation.
Zelensky also addressed another contention involving the Starlink satellite network, used by Ukrainian forces. He claimed U.S. government decisions led to restrictions on Starlink’s speed, affecting Ukraine’s defense. Despite not knowing the exact source within the administration, Zelensky called for the limitation’s reversal.
The interview amplified the growing rift between Trump and Zelensky. Trump has recently criticized Zelensky, favoring Russian President Vladimir Putin, and eased economic pressures on Moscow, causing further tension. Trump argued increased Russian diesel supplies would reduce global fuel prices.
Bessent defended the administration’s actions, noting only the diesel embargo was lifted. The ongoing dispute underscores complexities in U.S.-Ukraine relations amid broader geopolitical challenges.
