Morgan Park senior Travezz Jones demonstrated exceptional skills on the field. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver showcased an impressive ability to get open and a sharp sense of timing. Jones acknowledged his critical role, stating, “The ball was there, and I knew I had to help out my team and get us going because we were playing kind of flat.” His efforts provided the energy needed for their comeback.
Jones’ pivotal touchdown catch and 2-point conversion led the Mustangs to a 24-14 victory over Kenwood during the city championship game at Lane Stadium, Chicago. Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. excelled, completing 14 of 21 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns for Morgan Park, who now boast an 8-1 record and the Public League Red Star title.
Junior wide receiver Jaxon Bland contributed with a touchdown catch and a 2-point conversion. On the opposing side, the Broncos showcased talent with junior quarterback Malachi Henigan delivering a remarkable 78-yard touchdown pass to senior Lawrence Carr, along with a four-yard touchdown run. Despite their efforts, the Broncos, holding a 6-3 record and the Public League Red Shield title, fell short.

Travezz Jones led Morgan Park with five catches totaling 76 yards. Coach Chris James praised his growth, noting, “I’ve had him all four years, and he’s just become much more mature… When we needed him the most, he really stepped up and made plays.” Jones’ 27-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter erased Kenwood’s 14-8 halftime lead.
Jones and quarterback Smith shared a strong connection on the field. Smith explained, “We looked at each other, and we knew it was coming. We have an unbreakable bond.” Jones’ agility and speed placed significant pressure on Kenwood’s defense, as he described, “My game is very fast and physical, and they tried to get me out of my game.”
During the game, Jones made a crucial 23-yard reception on third-and-19, setting up Bland’s decisive touchdown in the final quarter. Jones attributed his success to a boost in confidence following his own touchdown, saying, “The game is all about confidence… I was going to do whatever possible to keep the offense rolling.”
Jones thrives on creating mismatches, using his quickness to excel both outside and inside, with his performance as a slot receiver showcasing this further. He stated, “Each year, my role has gotten bigger, and I feel like I’m one of the main pieces of the offense.” Holding a scholarship offer from Western Illinois, Jones aims to continue Morgan Park’s tradition of producing collegiate-level receivers.
Influenced by older cousins, Jones recognized his talent at a young age, cementing his role as a natural playmaker by ages 7 or 8. His seamless communication with teammates is evident on the field. Jones asserts his self-assuredness in his performances, capturing his intrinsic competitiveness, “I know how good I am, and when I touch the ball, I just go out and do my thing.”
Jones’ influence extends beyond the field, reflecting his impact on team dynamics and future prospects in football.
