The Chicago Fire secured their place in the postseason on Saturday night, achieving consecutive playoff berths for the first time since the period between 2007 and 2009. Despite a 1-0 defeat to the New England Revolution, they clinched the spot thanks to Orlando City’s 4-1 victory over D.C. United later that day.
The Fire, with a record of 14 wins, 10 losses, and 6 draws, have accumulated a total of 48 points, placing them fourth in the Eastern Conference. With four regular-season matches left, they aim to improve their standings. Last season, the team made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2017, marking a return to success by winning their first postseason match since 2009 in a 3-1 win against Orlando City during the Eastern Conference wild-card match.
In the game against New England Revolution, Matt Polster played a pivotal role by scoring in the first half. Assisted by passes from Carles Gil and Peyton Miller, Polster netted his second goal of the season in the 26th minute. Goalkeeper Matt Turner ensured the lead was maintained by blocking six shots, achieving his sixth clean sheet of the season. Turner’s performance highlights his improvement as he had only two shutouts in his initial 112 starts for the club.
On the other side, Chicago’s goalkeeper, Chris Brady, saved three shots in the match. The Fire have faced setbacks recently with two consecutive losses following a three-match winning streak. Their upcoming matchup is against Atlanta United on Saturday.
