UCLA quarterback Ty Dieffenbach made an impressive debut as a starter, driving his team to a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl. Following Nico Iamaleava’s injury, Dieffenbach stepped up, passing for 264 yards and maintaining UCLA’s unbeaten status in the Big Ten.
The Bruins’ defense played a crucial role, successfully stopping Wisconsin from a fourth-quarter comeback, including a decisive halt on fourth-and-two. Despite committing eight penalties totaling 78 yards, UCLA successfully converted 13 third downs.
Dieffenbach led an exhilarating six-play, 89-yard drive in the fourth quarter, ensuring victory for the Bruins and securing bowl eligibility. The team improved to 6-0 under coach Bob Chesney, becoming the sole undefeated team in the Big Ten.
Wisconsin, boasting a strong defense ranked 15th in total defense, limited UCLA’s ground game, allowing just 3.2 yards per carry. However, running back Wayne Knight managed to find the end zone for his 12th touchdown, despite being restricted to 29 all-purpose yards.
The game saw UCLA pivot towards Dieffenbach’s passing capabilities in response to Wisconsin’s robust defensive line, which kept Dieffenbach mostly composed under pressure. He finished 22 of 33, just shy of Iamaleava’s best performance, setting up crucial plays like a 21-yard pass to Jalen Saint Paul leading to Knight’s touchdown.
Dieffenbach showcased resilience and precision, especially on a successful 89-yard drive culminating in Anthony Woods’ three-yard run. Despite one interception on a last-second Hail Mary and a single sack, his performance kept UCLA firmly in control.
Defensively, UCLA’s secondary restricted Wisconsin’s passing game, conceding only 66 yards with key player Rodrick Pleasant absent. Wisconsin’s quarterback Colton Joseph managed a touchdown and 71 rushing yards, employing diverse plays to challenge UCLA’s defense.
While UCLA didn’t produce a turnover for the first time this season, their defense executed key stops. A pivotal 10-yard sack by Jalen Woods led to a missed 46-yard field goal attempt by Wisconsin’s Gavin Lahm. In critical moments, such as stopping Darrion Dupree on fourth-and-two, UCLA’s defense solidified their grasp on the game.
This victory highlights the strength and depth within UCLA’s roster, confirming their status as a formidable force in the Big Ten.
