The Chicago Blackhawks faced a tough challenge against the Dallas Stars in their first meeting of the 2026-27 season. After a successful record against the Stars last season, winning two out of three games, the Blackhawks couldn’t maintain their dominance. Coach Jeff Blashill reflected on past victories, reminding everyone about previous setbacks, like the Hawks’ recent loss to the Mammoth.
Playing in front of a crowd of 18,233 at the United Center, the Blackhawks failed to impress, losing 4-0. They entered the game on a two-game winning streak, yet displayed issues with defensive-zone coverage and puck management. This loss brought their record to 2-2-0 on their homestand and 3-6-0 overall. The team now faces a break until their next match against the Montreal Canadiens.
Captain Connor Bedard acknowledged the chance to use the break for improvement. Despite a low shot count, the Blackhawks had scoring opportunities in the first period. Missteps in converting those were apparent whenever fans groaned at missed chances. Defenseman Alex Vlasic noted the team’s frequent turnovers contributed to their challenges.
We made too many mistakes out there with pucks passes all around the ice. It seemed like they were just jumping on anytime we turn the puck over.– Alex Vlasic
The first period ended scoreless, with Jason Robertson’s goal disallowed for offside. Though the Blackhawks had power plays, they couldn’t capitalize. Bedard emphasized the importance of creating more chances to change the game’s momentum.
In the second period, Stars goalie Jake Oettinger wasn’t heavily tested, making 19 saves to earn a shutout. Blashill commented on the Blackhawks’ lack of aggression in attacking the net. Robertson’s power-play goal followed by Arttu Hyry’s increased the Stars’ lead in the second period.
Hyry and Roope Hintz added to the score in the third period, sealing the victory. The Blackhawks were outshot 32-19 by the Stars, who have shown resilience after a disappointing playoff exit. The game’s outcome highlighted the Blackhawks’ difficulties with hard-checking teams and their ongoing need for improvement.
Anton Frondell, despite leading the team in assists, had a challenging game with limited ice time and faceoff performance. Blashill remained optimistic about Frondell’s potential, though noting the off night. Facing multiple playoff teams from last season, the Blackhawks are learning hard lessons but aiming for growth.
Strategizing for consistency and disciplined play will be crucial in upcoming matches.
