Susie Wiles on Overcoming Cancer and Finding Purpose
Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff, recently announced her recovery from an aggressive form of breast cancer. Wiles, who became the first woman in this role in January 2025, was diagnosed in March 2026. She underwent six months of treatment and shared her clear pathology results from Mayo Clinic, stating, “I am cancer-free.”
No Warning Signs
Wiles’s diagnosis surprised her as she had no symptoms or reasons to suspect anything was wrong. She said, I felt fine. I was working every day in one of the most demanding jobs imaginable. There was nothing telling me that I had cancer.
Wiles attended her annual checkup and was not due for a mammogram yet, but the equipment became available. Her doctor proposed getting it out of the way. Despite initially resisting, Wiles agreed, and the mammogram detected early-stage cancer. She shares, We would be having a very different conversation if that scan hadn’t happened. Early detection matters.
Emotional Toll
Cancer treatment takes a severe physical toll, but Wiles highlighted the mental and emotional challenges. There were hard days. I don’t want to minimize that. Cancer is brutal and unrelenting,
she stated. She credits her doctors, family, friends, and colleagues as her support system. Her faith also played a crucial role in sustaining her through the process. Having people around you who can carry some of that weight matters enormously,
she added.
Finding Purpose at Work
Wiles continued to work throughout her treatment, finding that it provided a distraction and a reminder of her identity beyond cancer. Work gave me somewhere else to put my mind,
she explained, noting that continuing to serve the president and the country gave her purpose.
Prioritizing Health
Now cancer-free, Wiles emphasizes healthy habits. She focuses on diet, sleep, and exercise. I am far more conscious of what my body needs,
she said, committing to a lifestyle that reduces the risk of recurrence.
Advice to Others
Wiles urges everyone to prioritize regular medical checkups and screenings. We all have reasons to put things off, but you cannot be too busy to take care of your health.
For those battling cancer, she advises accepting help and trusting healthcare providers while also maintaining faith. There can be life, joy, and purpose not only on the other side but also in the midst of the fight,
she said.
Wiles expresses gratitude for her recovery but notes the experience hasn’t changed her essence. I love my work. I love my family. I am enormously grateful to be cancer-free, and I intend to live my life fully,
she concluded.
