In recent weeks, three significant Latin American political figures have supported Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-Florida), raising concerns among some Democrats about foreign interference in U.S. elections. Salazar, who seeks reelection in a district formerly won by President Donald Trump by a notable margin in 2024, has faced criticism for her stance on the administration’s immigration policies.
Salazar, aiming to secure Latino voters in South Florida, announced endorsements from prominent right-wing Latin American leaders. Examples include Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella. Salazar shared a video from de la Espriella, describing her as “Colombia’s best friend in the United States Congress.” On Monday, Argentine President Javier Milei publicly endorsed her for reelection, acknowledging her understanding of Latin America and her readiness to confront “socialist leftists.”
The endorsements have sparked disapproval on social media and from Democrats like Gregory Meeks (D-New York), who demand Congress clarify its stance against foreign electoral interference. Meeks emphasized that American voters decide American elections, not foreign leaders.
