Chicago playwright Netta Walker presents a powerful new drama titled Hayward, drawing inspiration from classics like Electra and Hamlet. The central figure communicates with her father’s ghost, driven by an urgent need for vengeance. This 90-minute play, debuting at the Gift Theatre, showcases an intensity akin to works like Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Purpose.
Set in the Black American South, Hayward explores family dynamics torn apart in the wake of a death. The character Luna stands out, illustrating a profound connection likely influenced by Walker’s own experiences. Unlike her previous work, Keerah, which was precise and refined, Hayward captures raw emotion.
Directed by AmBer Montgomery, the production commands relentless energy. The cast, including Sydney Charles and Alfred H. Wilson, delivers performances that evoke real tension. Charles’ portrayal of a recovering addict captivates the audience. Wilson’s depiction of Pastor Johnson navigates perilous interactions on stage.
Ireon Roach’s portrayal of Luna is particularly noteworthy. Her character, caught between love and anger, embodies the human reaction to trauma. Her emotive performance presents a tangible portrayal of emotional turmoil.
While Hayward is gripping, there are elements that could use refinement. The initial scene could incorporate the play’s overall dramatic intensity. Pastor Johnson’s actions and motivations could be clearer to enrich the audience’s understanding. Nonetheless, the play’s observational acuity promises to deepen over time.
Presented at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theater, Hayward invites viewers to explore complex family relationships and individual struggles. Addressing universal themes, it resonates beyond the confines of its Southern setting.
