In West Palm Beach, President Donald Trump recently announced his endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the country’s national elections approach on October 27. Trump’s support comes after months of hesitation, during which the American leader refrained from backing Netanyahu publicly. This endorsement is significant for Netanyahu’s campaign as it highlights Trump’s continued popularity in Israel.
On social media, Trump praised Netanyahu as a ‘Great Warrior Prime Minister’ and a ‘greater Partner for Peace,’ particularly in relation to their joint efforts against Iran. This backing arrives during a critical period, as Israeli voters prepare to cast their ballots for the first time following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud Party expressed gratitude for Trump’s endorsement, sharing a statement from Netanyahu in Hebrew. ‘Thank you, President Trump, for the tremendous support and work together. Together we will complete the mission!’ Netanyahu’s message was accompanied by a video montage of him and Trump, showcasing their cooperation.
The election race remains tight, and it is unclear what effect Trump’s endorsement will have. Although Trump is still well-liked in Israel, some citizens and commentators have voiced disappointment regarding the unresolved outcome of the conflict with Iran and Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire, which failed to fully meet the countrys’ expectations.
“If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so,” Trump stated, emphasizing Netanyahu’s strength and bravery amid opposition even within Israel.
In the past, Trump has supported Netanyahu during elections and has called for his pardon on corruption charges. However, Trump’s recent remarks had been less enthusiastic. In an interview with Time magazine, Trump claimed to have stepped back from foreign politics despite continuing to campaign for U.S. candidates.
Trump’s endorsement is part of his broader strategy of supporting foreign leaders, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Trump’s second term saw collaboration on joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, yet differences arose during the ongoing eight-month conflict with Iran.
During the war, disagreements emerged between Trump and Netanyahu. Trump criticized Israel’s early attack on an Iranian gas field and expressed frustration over Israel’s clashes with Hezbollah, which hindered peace negotiations with Iran. Netanyahu also rejected one of Trump’s proposed ceasefires in Gaza, insisting that Israel should maintain control until Hamas’s disarmament.
