A Florida mother, Tara Johnson, embarked on a journey to learn more about her adoptive daughter’s heritage through DNA testing. The results revealed a surprising connection between them. Tara decided to test the DNA of her 7-year-old daughter, Agnas, to explore the various cultures and locations that form part of her background.
Tara, who grew up celebrating her Sicilian roots, explained to Newsweek that understanding her own heritage contributed significantly to her identity and sense of belonging. She wishes for all her children, including Agnas, to have a similar experience.
When Agnas became part of our family, she brought with her an entire history and heritage that existed long before us,” Tara said. “As her mom, I think it’s important to celebrate that, not the parts of her story that began when she joined our family.
Tara is also mother to Hallie, 13, Theo, 9, and Rowan, 6, with her partner Troy. Agnas’ biological mother had informed Tara that Agnas’ grandfather was Lebanese, while little was known about her biological father’s lineage.
However, the DNA test results brought an unexpected twist. Shared on TikTok (@tarakole), the test estimated Agnas to be 24.6 percent Scottish and Welsh, 23.6 percent Southern Italian, 19.3 percent English, and 5.8 percent Dutch. The Southern Italian ancestry thrilled Tara.
Tara shared her sentiments about the discovery, noting how being Sicilian was a source of pride and joy for her. “It’s a part of my identity that I’ve always celebrated, so discovering Southern Italian ancestry in Agnas’ results was such a fun and unexpected surprise,” she expressed.
Despite not sharing biology, Tara emphasized the unique bond she shares with Agnas. She found the shared ancestral discovery special, highlighting the importance of these connections beyond biological links.
The results, though surprising, raised questions because they did not show the Lebanese ancestry that Tara anticipated. Planning to delve deeper, Tara intends to try another DNA testing company and explore services that could offer more precise regional ancestry estimates. She acknowledged that such tests offer estimates rather than conclusive insights into a person’s heritage or family history.
Tara views learning about Agnas’ lineage as part of a broader commitment to keep her daughter connected to her entire story. They maintain an open relationship with Agnas’ biological family, aiming for Agnas to feel connected to all who love her.
This experience strengthened Tara’s understanding that while ancestry and family can be related, they are distinct. She stated, “DNA can tell us about our ancestry, but it can’t measure love, belonging, or the bonds we build with one another.” Tara emphasized that Agnas’ story expanded when she joined their family, underscoring the growth in their shared journey.
