Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, reported significant fundraising totals following a federal government search of her home in Washington, D.C., this month. According to an analysis by the Washington Post, Omar raised more than $1.5 million in campaign funds in the days surrounding the raid. This amount is part of the nearly $1.9 million she reported raising in the first two weeks of October, as filed with the Federal Election Commission.
On the day of the raid, October 12, Omar raised $847,000, marking the highest single-day total for her during the current election cycle. She secured an additional $665,000 the following day. This fundraising effort contributes to the more than $8 million Omar has accumulated throughout the two-year campaign cycle.
The raid was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and is part of a federal inquiry into whether Omar or her father falsified immigration documentation upon arriving in the United States in the 1990s. Omar was 12 years old at the time of her family’s arrival, and her father has since passed away. Omar has consistently denied any wrongdoing with the immigration paperwork and characterized the raid as political intimidation.
In response to the investigation, Omar has been soliciting donations to cover her legal expenses, acknowledging the financial and personal challenges involved. She posted a social media video stating, “It is going to be a very expensive and challenging time.”
