Ohio’s largest newspaper, The Plain Dealer, has altered its previous policy on endorsements in major elections. The newspaper is now backing Democrat Amy Acton for governor, strongly condemning Republican opponent Vivek Ramaswamy. This decision follows a controversial campaign ad from Ramaswamy’s team, which featured Acton’s mother accusing her of dishonesty.
The editorial states, “Vivek Ramaswamy, seeking the highest office in this state, has produced a campaign advertisement that weaponizes the sexual abuse his opponent, Amy Acton, suffered as a child.” The newspaper stressed the importance of maintaining a line of decency that all Ohioans should uphold, regardless of their political affiliation.
Amy Acton has shared her history of childhood sexual abuse, detailing that her stepfather, who was charged with rape, disappeared after the allegations. Acton has also mentioned not having contact with her mother since the incidents that occurred when she was just 12 years old.
The Plain Dealer’s decision marks a shift from its recently established policy to refrain from endorsing candidates for governor, U.S. Senate, and president. The newspaper had decided to concentrate on supporting candidates in less-publicized races. However, they explained their change in stance by saying, “We made our endorsement policy to serve our readers. We cannot let it become a reason to remain silent when we believe Ohio faces a choice this consequential.”
This is a developing story. More updates are anticipated.
