Federal officials revealed on Monday that Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderón, 43, from South Los Angeles, has admitted to staging a false kidnapping in 2025. She pretended to be abducted by federal agents or individuals claiming to represent them. The Office of First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bilal A. Essayli for the Central District of California reported that Calderón fabricated her disappearance to create media outrage and planned to use this narrative to support a lawsuit against Border Patrol.
In June and July 2025, Calderón manufactured her detention scenario, claiming it was at the hands of federal agents or their surrogates. Her actions involved making anonymous and blocked phone calls to construct a deceptive story, officials stated.

Photos allegedly show Calderón appearing detained and mistreated, according to an affidavit. She falsely contended that federal agents kidnapped her at various sites, altering her look to suggest abuse during her supposed custody.
Court records detail Calderón’s false claim on June 25, 2025, telling someone that immigration officials were detaining her near a fast-food outlet. She even alleged threats to break her window. Two days later, using caller ID blocking, she contacted a tenants’ rights advocate with another fabricated story about authorities taking her to San Ysidro and coercing her into signing deportation documents.

Surveillance footage captures Calderón in a parking lot, according to the Justice Department. She further alleged captivity in a warehouse with other detainees.
Officials stated Calderón’s lies led to false reports to media and law enforcement that she was kidnapped by plain-clothed masked men in unmarked vehicles posing as federal agents. While Calderón hid in Bakersfield, these claims drove community organizers to demand her release. Videotapes show Calderón walking to a parked car, as mentioned in the affidavit.
On July 3, 2025, she again utilized caller ID blocking, falsely claiming impending release due to media coverage. She traveled from Bakersfield to Tulare County to stage her release from ‘Border Patrol’ and recruited a person to witness her situation, officials explained.

Calderón modified her appearance to demonstrate mistreatment, assisted by a co-conspirator who photographed her altered state. An affidavit includes a picture of Calderón at a Bakersfield shopping center during her alleged disappearance.
During the subsequent two days, Calderón ignored her phones, avoiding calls despite law enforcement’s pursuit, confirmed the attorney’s office. She admitted guilt to one count of conspiracy to disrupt the lawful operations of Homeland Security Investigations within federal jurisdiction.
Her sentencing is set for February 8, 2027, with a potential maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
